Commonly known as Chinese knotweed, He Shou Wu (pronounced ho-shoe-wu) is a Chinese herb obtained from the tuberous roots of
Polygonum multiflorum. Polygonium multiflorum root tuber is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a
tonic and an anti-aging remedy, particularly for hair loss and premature graying of hair.
He Shou Wu has its roots in folklore, which tells of a man named Mr. Ho who regularly consumed the roots of Polygonum
multiflorum for its reported ability to supplement the body's qi (chi) or vital energy and nourish the skin. After regular use
of the plant, Mr. Ho's gray hair reportedly turned black, and so the new name was born: (He = Mr. Ho; shou =
head; wu = black). This has led to the continued traditional use of He Shou Wu as an herb that plays a role in
rejuvenating the appearance of hair. In recent years, Polygonium multiflorum root have also become popular in the Americas,
especially as ingredient of dietary supplements promoting hair growth. This application is supported by experimental studies
based on the biological mode of action and clinical research demonstrating the efficacy and safety of Polygonium multiflorum
root extract in the prevention of age-related hair loss; while also improving hair thickness and appearance. Today, He Shou
Wu is used as a natural herbal solution to help reduce hair loss and enhance hair growth in men and women.†
